When to Consider Breast Reduction Surgery

From movies to magazines, for centuries women with large breasts have been glamorized. But what most people don’t know is that disproportionately large breasts can be painful and cause a lot of emotional distress. Are your big breasts causing you pain and unhappiness?

Breast reduction surgery can help eliminate pain while providing a more proportionate figure and improved quality of life. L.A. Vinas Plastic Surgery offers reduced-scar breast reduction surgery to patients in Florida who want to relieve some of the physical and emotional distress caused by large breasts. Here’s how to know if it’s for you:

Disadvantages of large breasts

You’ve been told, “Bigger is better.” However, if you have big breasts, you know that’s not always true. Many small-chested women wish for larger breasts, but what they don’t know are the many downsides they bring.

Some disadvantages of large breasts include:

  • Sagging breasts
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Bra strap indentation
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Chafing

While these physical drawbacks are limiting, emotional distress is the hardest to endure. Women with large breasts have low self-esteem leading to anxiety, depression, and decreased quality of life.

The goal of breast reduction surgery

Breast reduction surgery is an option for women who want to improve their body symmetry while resolving pain. Although a major surgery, Luis Vinas, MD, performs breast reductions regularly to help women live happier and healthier lives.

The goal of breast reduction surgery is to remove excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts for a more desirable size. Surgery may be done at any age, but is best done over the age of 16 once the breasts have fully developed and remained the same size for at least a year.

Breast reduction surgery is generally done as an outpatient procedure and takes about 3-4 hours.

Is it for me?

Deciding to undergo breast reduction surgery is a personal decision, and the procedure should be done only for you. If you’re experiencing one or more of the disadvantages of having large breasts, you might consider breast reduction surgery.

Dr. Vinas may suggest breast reduction surgery if you’ve experienced problems linked to large breasts for more than a year. In some cases, your insurance may cover the surgery if it’s deemed medically necessary. The best way to find out if breast reduction is right for you is by coming in for a consultation with Dr. Vinas.

What’s involved

Because everyone’s body is different, breast reduction surgery looks different from case to case. Here are the steps often involved.

1 Anesthesia

To help keep you comfortable during your procedure, anesthesia is administered either through intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Most of our patients remember counting backward and then waking up once the procedure has successfully been completed.

2 Reduced-scar incision

Dr. Vinas is known for his surgical expertise with breast reduction and minimal scarring. Using a “lollipop” technique, he makes an incision around the areola and down the lower portion of your breast. This allows Dr. Vinas to pull the sides of your breasts in and up to provide minimal scarring, hidden well within the contours of your body and beneath a bra or swimsuit.

3 Tissue removal and repositioning

Dr. Vinas repositions the areola and can even reduce its perimeter to improve proportions, if needed. Next, he removes excess tissue while lifting and reshaping the breast tissue for a more desirable shape.

4 Close incisions

Lastly, Dr. Vinas closes the incisions of the newly shaped breasts, laying sutures deep in the breast tissue. He may use dissolvable sutures or skin adhesive, which don’t need to be taken out, saving you a trip back to our office.

Results and recovery

It’s important to note that while you’ll notice a smaller breast size after surgery, it often takes months to experience the full results. Most patients need at least a week to rest and recover before they can return to work.

Soreness in the breast area is normal during recovery, and Dr. Vinas may prescribe some medication to help keep you comfortable. Most patients notice improvements day by day, and experience full results at around 3-4 months, once the breast tissue has healed and settled.
